What is Sales: Definition, 4 Types, Functions, and Tasks

What is Sales? Sales are the activity or business of selling a product or service. In general, sales is the job of selling a product or promoting an item with clear arguments and descriptions.

A person who does sales activities is often referred to as a salesperson. A salesperson is a person who works to increase product sales by persuading customers to buy products at the company where they work.

Therefore, the salesperson must be someone who can public speak well and has a high knowledge with the products he sells. So, it can attract consumers to be able to buy or at least be interested in the products sold.

What is Sales?

Sales is a term used to describe the selling activity of goods or services. Usually, each company does have its own team responsible for sales.

There are three main elements behind the performance and responsibility of this team. The first is the area or area of sale.

The sales team will move after mapping out their sales area, so they know where to sell the goods or services.

Second, the goods or services sold. By deeply understanding the goods or services sold, the sales team will know what sales strategies they will implement.

Third, the target customer. After knowing the area of sales and goods or services sold, then the sales team will know what kind of target customers they will pursue. This target customer is also one of the keys to the success of the sales process.

Sales Types

Direct Sales

Distribution Sales

Sales distribution is sales whose job is to distribute products to Resellers, Outlets, Stores, Mini Markets and Supermarkets. Sales like this are routine, so usually get a fixed salary even though variable income and bonuses also exist based on the target value that has been determined every month.

Sales Promotion

Sales promotion is like that. It sells, but its real function is in terms of overall marketing. It carries the image of the product. Not infrequently this type of sales share merchandise on buyers. These sales are not really to find profit, but it is more to the expense / build an image.

Mixed Direct – Distribution Sales

This type of sales function is distributed, but the target is directly to consumers. The skills required are relatively the same as sales distribution. Usually the products sold are not branded products. For example, commodity goods such as household appliances, foodstuffs and other daily needs.

Offer Products to Consumers

A salesperson must be able to convince the benefits and advantages of the product offered to his customers so that they are interested to buy products from the company. In other words, a salesperson must be able to marketing the product to be sold.

Convince Potential Customers

Sales must also be able to convince prospective customers who are known to be hesitant in making decisions or making choices in choosing the products offered.

Directing Targets

Furthermore, sales must also be able to direct which targets and to whom products will be offered and sold.
